Researchers at theMassachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)have developed a chip design that is much more energy efficient than processors currently used in mobile devices.

The design is being shown off at this week's International Solid State Circuits Conference in San Francisco.

The design is aimed at mobile phones, PDAs and small implantable medical devices such as pacemakers.

The improved energy efficiency in the system lies in its reduced working voltage level. Most current mobile processors operate at around 1 volt, but MIT's design requires only 0.3 volts.

It is expected that the trial MIT design will be available commercially in devices in around five year's time.
