UK property development company Robert Hughes Limited
has begun implementing private mobile networks at its construction
sites to improve communications and cut costs.
The company is using Rapid Deployment Units (RDUs) from GSM
network technology provider
Private Mobile Networks of the Teleware Group to eliminate
construction site call costs and its reliance on public mobile
networks.
There is no charge for calls between handsets on a single site
and the RDUs can be connected to a standard phone line to allow
users to make external calls at standard landline call rates.
The first deployment of the RDU by Robert Hughes is at a
multi-storey building site to overcome difficulties in
communicating with staff working below ground level.
"Construction is an industry in which we constantly need to ask
questions, verify and quantify, and the RDU enabled us to be up and
running within minutes of arriving on site," said Robert Hughes,
company founder and managing director.
The RDU is located centrally at a site and handsets distributed
to staff to provide complete communication coverage.
Robert Hughes said both the RDU and handsets were designed to
withstand heavy use and the handsets were cheaper to replace than
standard products.
