Following successful trials in Ashford, Folkstone and Dover, Virgin Media is planning to offer 50Mbps broadband to nine million homes in the UK by the end of the year.

The company is also planning to begin the first part of a major broadband upgrade programme. Customers on Virgin Media's "L" tier broadband package will be upgraded for free, taking their service from 4Mbytes to 10Mbytes. The upgrade will roll out by regions from late February and will give customers more than double the speed of their current package.

Neil Berkett, acting CEO of Virgin Media, said, "We have barely scratched the surface of what is possible with our cable network, and we will continue to look for new ways to satisfy the growing demand for even faster broadband in the UK."
