Firms wishing to recruit IT security staff can refer to a new hiring guide from international information security certification body (ISC)2 for tips on what to look for.

The Hiring Guide to the Information Security Profession is a free reference source for human resource professionals, hiring managers and recruiters.

It provides tips on how to find, recruit, hire and retain qualified information security staff, along with the history and growth of the information security profession, typical job functions and career paths, and ideal candidate traits.

The 30-page guide provides tips on crafting job descriptions, screening, interviewing, extending an offer and a section on retention and a list of online resources.

(ISC)2 executive director Eddie Zeitler said, "Hiring first-rate information security staff is critical to mitigating risks that can destroy a company's reputation, violate privacy, result in the theft or destruction of intellectual property, and even endanger lives."

The guide is available in hard copy or in electronic format downloadable from the (ISC)2 Hiring Resource Center at www.isc2.org/HRCenter. The centre also has the results of salary and job surveys, White Papers and case studies, as well as a free job/candidate matching service.
