ScottishPowerhas awarded a £1.7m contract toESRI (UK)to web-enable itsgeographic information system(GIS).

The utility company said the system will give more than 2,000 staff access map-based information online to improve productivy and collaboration between office and field staff. It will also eliminate distribution costs by providing access to all documents in an electronic format.

Scottish Power chose ESRI because of an existing utilities-specific version of its foundation GIS platform developed with software company Miner and Miner.

The system will help improve customer service by enabling Scottish Power to model the effects of a power outage and identify customers who may be affected.

ESRI will also migrate the utility company's data from legacy systems to a central database.

"We see GIS as central to our business as an open platform that can integrate with all our operational IT systems," said Dave Clarke, spatial and mobile delivery manager at Scottish Power.

The company operates more than 100,000km of electricity network, supplying power to more than 4.3 million homes and businesses in Scotland, Merseyside and North Wales.
