More than half of UK companies have problems with most of their critical business processes, according to a survey by infrastructure software companySoftware AG.

A survey of 160 IT directors revealed that 52% felt that more than half of their strategic business processes could not be easily shared across the organisation and 27% said this was true of at least 25% to 50% of their processes.

The survey found that customer service was most affected by this problem, with 47% of respondents identifying problems with processes related to customers.

"As industries become increasingly competitive, the most successful companies do not just compete on the products they sell, but on how effectively they can run their business operations," said Jim Close, senior vice-president and UK country manager at Software AG.

Many of the IT directors surveyed said that previous business process improvement projects had been frustrated by the inability to access data relating to where the business problems were.

They said they did not have enough information about the impact of changes to processes, changes in business conditions, and the cost of individual process steps.
