Ofcom is consulting over its wireless spectrum
management plans for the2012 London Olympics.
The close management of wireless spectrum was a condition of the
London Olympics bid, to make sure the media, officials,
participants and spectators could rely on secure and available
wireless links.
The Games are expected to attract around 20,000 accredited media
to the UK, who will beam live pictures and commentary around the
world.
In addition, the Games will attract over 10 million spectators
and nearly 15,000 participants to the 35 competition venues across
the UK. This will require wireless communications for logistics to
ensure the smooth and seamless operation of the event, said
Ofcom.
As part of London's bid, the Government guaranteed that spectrum
would be allocated for the organisation of the Games. An
Ofcom discussion document published today looks at the various
demands for spectrum in preparation for and during the six week
period of the Games.
Ofcom planned and managed the spectrum requirements for the
start of the 2007 Tour de France, which set off from London in
July. It intends to build on this experience as well as identify
lessons from other events in planning for the London Olympics.
Ofcom aims to consult on a full spectrum plan for the London
Games following the Beijing Olympics, which start in August
2008.
