Seventy five per cent of the UK will connect to the web viabroadbandby December 2007 but top speeds are low compared to the rest of the world, analysts have said.

"The speeds that are available in the UK are lagging a long, long way behind other European counties," said Jupiter analyst Ian Fogg.

The fastest speed available in the UK is 24Mbps although typically the fastest people will get is about 8Mbps. Users in France are able to access speeds around 24Mbps as standard.

Broadband CEOs have recently been asked by the Ofcom consumer panel to justify advertised broadband speeds, when many users fail to get anything like the maximum speeds promised.

Colette Bowe, chairman of the communications watchdog's independent Ofcom Consumer Panel, has asked the top six UK broadband CEOs to come up with systems that give customers clear information.
