Standard Life gives snail mail an e-boost

Standard Life is using image-recognition software to automate the distribution of paper-based mail, allowing it to handle higher volumes at faster speeds.

The financial services company is using EMC's Captiva Input­accel software to automatically decide where to send documents after they have been electronically scanned.

The mail-handling centre in Edinburgh processes more than one million items of post a year. The firm scans them using Kodac scanners and distributes them using a workflow system, supplied by DST. Previously staff would read the documents on screen and input information into the workflow system.

Gerry Timoney, IT project leader at Standard Life, said the software has cut response time to customer enquiries and will help the firm with regulatory compliance.
