The Royal Bank of Scotland
is trialling a system where customers can make
contactless payments via their mobile phones in its Edinburgh
headquarters with public trials planned for next year.
Tap and Go Mobile Phone payments, as it is known, enables
customers to make debit transactions of up to £10 with their mobile
phones, which are placed on a contactless payment terminal.
Paul Geddes, chief executive of consumer banking at The Royal
Bank of Scotland, said mobile phones are playing an increasingly
important role in people everyday lives and their use for making
low value payments will be welcomed by customers.
"According to official figures,
80% of UK adults own at least one mobile. As we constantly look
for ways to improve customer convenience, we therefore believe that
mobile phones will be the next step in the payments evolution," he
said.
