Datacentre managers are increasingly turning tovirtualisationto contain costs and
manage growth, according to Symantec's latest global state of the
datacentre research report.
The report, based on surveys of datacentre managers in 14
countries including the UK by Ziff Davis Enterprise, said Global
2000 enterprises were spending more than £3.2bn annually to help
manage datacentre complexity.
The report said server virtualisation and
consolidation were considered top cost containment strategies
for the majority of respondents, with half implementing
virtualisation strategies and 58% implementing consolidation
strategies.
The research showed server virtualisation was under
consideration by 90%, 75% were considering storage virtualisation,
and 91% were considering consolidation.
Some 59% of respondents said web applications were the most
likely to be moved into a virtual environment, followed by database
management applications, selected by 42% of respondents.
The report said as a result of these trends, there was a clear
need for tools and technologies to manage both physical and virtual
environments in a more consistent and comprehensive way. This would
empower datacentre professionals to master the growing complexity
of their datacentres and have greater confidence to deliver against
the aggressive service level agreements.
