Googleis reported to be making a
serious attempt to buy wireless radio spectrum in the US. Google is
planning to finance a bid in auctions scheduled for January and is
said to be considering making a play without partners.
Google had previously suggested it might bid over £2.09bn for
use of the wireless spectrum.
Analysts say Google could be bidding to evolve its postion as an
ISP. Alternatively, the company could be purchasing spectrum to
maintain
competitive access to its online services, as the auctions
could lead to a "two-tier" internet, with charges attached to
premium services.
The company will not declare its intentions ahead of the
December registration deadline set by the Federal Communications
Commission.
