BSI
British Standardsis to publish a
specification forweb standardsearly next year to
govern the effectiveness, function and appearance of
websites.
The publicly available specification (PAS 124) will be developed
using a two-stage process. A BSI steering group will review and
provide feedback on the specification before it is made available
for public comment.
The steering group will include representatives from Shell,
Unilever, Institute of Directors, Interbrand, The Institution of
Engineering and Technology (IET), and the Localisation Industry
Standards Association (LISA).
"The specification will enable organisations and their suppliers
to better understand the need for web standards and consequently
provide structured websites," said Mike Low, director of BSI
British Standards.
The development of the publicly available specification (PAS
124) was commissioned by UK web content company Magus.
The firm said research showed many organisations did not have
formal standards defined to govern their websites. It said the
specification would provide a framework to help apply standards to
improve online performance and protect the integrity of their
brands.
