Clayton Glass, a manufacturer of sealed double-glazing
units for windows, has saved £25,000 in the first year after
implementing awireless barcode inventory control
system.
The system, from Barcoding.co.uk, links wirelessly into Clayton
Glass's production software from anywhere in the warehouse,
reducing costs by improving efficiency in making up orders and
eliminating paper documents.
Orders are displayed on handheld terminals, and as each barcoded
item is scanned in the picking process, it is added to the order
and deducted from the warehouse stock, ensuring orders are complete
and stock levels are accurate.
"We have gained speed, accuracy and real-time information with
the added benefit of comprehensive reporting," said Richard
Teasdale, financial controller and systems administrator at Clayton
Glass.
The company plans to extend the system to generate delivery
notes based on the actual delivery and improve traceablity outside
the factory to reduce lost-unit claims.
Teasdale also plans to use the barcode system to improve the
company's quality control process.
"We will be able to transfer handwritten records of failed units
directly into our management system simply by scanning the label,"
he said.
