Wal-Mart, the world's biggest
retailer, is to replace its in-house
accounting systems with SAP's enterprise resource planning
Financials package in 7,100 stores in 14 countries. The first phase
is due to finish in 2010.
A Wal-Mart spokesman said the retailer, which is engaged in a
£3bn international expansion programme, will replace in-house
accounting systems that are "too unwieldy for the global, complex
world the company is moving into".
He said, "The timing is right because there are limits to what
we can do in 14 countries with the legacy systems. The
SAP system is a superior tool for the future."
The accounting package will have to work with existing systems
in Wal-Mart, such as logistics and store management.
