Some 38% of local authorities responding to a recent
survey said their organisation had been faced with an incident in
which a laptop computer was lost or stolen during the past year -
including one of the six police authorities in the survey carried
out by security supplier BeCrypt.
Just one in 10 local authorities
encrypts all their computer data, the research revealed.
The survey was conducted by BeCrypt during August and September
2007. Questions in the survey asked what disaster recovery plans
councils had in place in the event that employees may not able to
get to work and how
important mobile working is to the organisation and data
security for mobile devices. It also included questions on data
leakage and the usage of USB devices.
