Schiphol airport in Amsterdam is using IBM to expand its
baggage capacity usingradio frequency
identification(RFID) technology.
IBM will provide the
baggage management system to control and track each bag
throughout the baggage transportation system using robot handling
software at the airport's planned new baggage hall.
IBM will also deliver consulting services, hardware, other
software and application development for the project. RFID
technology will be used to track checked-in baggage, said Big
Blue.
Work on the new baggage hall has just started. The new baggage
hall is designed to handle baggage for departing and transferring
passengers.
The hall will be used by different airline companies, with
KLM/Air France the biggest user. The system will also be connected
to other baggage halls at the airport, ensuring more efficient and
faster transfers of baggage between connecting flights.
When the hall opens in 2011, six robots will mechanically manage
baggage, handling 60% of the loading and further decreasing
connection times.
