TheOffice for National Statistics' (ONS) business case for outsourcing IT systems toFujitsuhas been criticised for not explaining how it will save money.

The contract, announced last Friday, is expected to help the ONS make savings of £35m by the end of 2008.

But the Public and Commercial Services Union, which represents 325,000 government workers, said that the assumptions behind IT outsourcing savings remain undisclosed.

"This is of no help in assessing whether the costs used for comparisons are correct and a fair comparison. This therefore limits our ability to properly scrutinise the business case," said Gez Kirby, chair of the ONS Departmental Trade Union Side.
