Next Move
The question
Where can I move from sales support ?
I have been working for an IT firm for two years and enjoy
working with technology. I understand and sell IT (hardware and
software, from mice to servers). I manage project roll-outs to
customers and get involved in almost every aspect of the sale and
implementation.
My role is sales support, and I do not feel the title justifies
the work. I am interested to know what other roles might suit me
and what skills and certifications I would need.
The solution
Your skills would suit project management
It sounds like
project management might suit your aspirations, and the skills
base you have built up.
IT is a wide area, and to reflect the growth in project work
that is now in the market place, more defined positions are
available, which play to the strengths of individuals who have a
project focus in the way they work. I would suggest you look at
gaining a certification in
Prince 2, which is a recognised project management methodology.
This will give your CV credibility, and will allow you to work
across hardware, software and general project management.
You may want to look at project management roles within the
professional services arm of a software or hardware company. If you
are in a "billable" role, it is likely you will receive some kind
of bonus-related incentive, per quarter or per assignment. I think
a role like this would fulfil your financial and career aspirations
in the short to medium term. Project management is the most buoyant
area of IT right now, and will grow over the next 18 to 24
months.
