Oxford University Press (OUP) has won an HP competition
to find the oldest runningHP-UX
serverin the UK.
In April this year, HP invited its customers to dust off their
HP-UX servers to find out who owned the oldest HP-UX installation
still in operation.
The winning server dates from 1993, and is still running mission
critical applications for the OUP.
As a prize, it has won an HP Integrity server with installation,
and a licence for HP-UX 11i and three-year support.
The OUP department running the old server is English Language
Teaching (ELT), which has consultants based in over 50 offices
around the world.
The consultants in each region are usually qualified English
language teachers and the ELT department in Oxford conducts
language research. It has relied on an HP-UX system to store and
manage its information databases for over ten years.
Geoff Butler, technical architect at OUP, said, "When we do
upgrade, it will be to a new HP-UX environment.
In the meantime, the HP-UX platform we have will keep number
crunching - there is life in the old dog yet."
