Ministry of Defence signs Blackberry deal

TheMinistry of Defencehas approved a secure Blackberry mobile data system supplied by BT.

BT will supply the Blackberry Enterprise Server platform and specially adapted Blackberry mobile devices to Ministry of Defence personnel.

In addition to having the ability to manage policies and access rights, Ministry of Defence IT decision-makers will also be able to remotely control, shut-down and wipe any Blackberry smartphone that has been lost or stolen.

The Blackberry Enterprise Server is now the only mobile data system currently approved for use by the Ministry of Defence.

Colonel David Jones for the MoD, said, "I am pleased this service will bring genuine benefit to the working lives of MoD people. Being able to see and respond to time-sensitive information on the move is critical to defence staff."

The Blackberry Enterprise Server will be available through the Defence Fixed Telecommunications Service (DFTS) contract delivered by BT. There will be a choice of two smartphones: the Blackberry 8700v and the Blackberry 8707v.
