Engineering consultancy Atkinsexpects
to save £20,000 a month in back-up, storage and service call
charges by rolling out a software-based archiving system to 12,000
users across its UK offices.
The
e-mail archiving system will also help Atkins manage a growing
volume of data relating to work it does for banks, governments and
other organisations, which it is legally required to retain.
The consultancy plans to complete the roll out of
Symantec's Enterprise Vault by February 2008.
"Once the final phase is complete, Group IS will have delivered
a much improved e-mail service to our customers and expects to
realise a business benefit, saving approximately £20,000 a month,"
said Paul Jolley, technical services team lead at Atkins Group
IS.
The savings will come from lower storage back-up service costs.
The firm also expects to reduce by 80% the 3,000 calls received by
the helpdesk each year about corrupted e-mail archives.
Back-up is one of the major costs for most businesses, said
Jolley. "Anything that requires less back-up usually has a
compelling business case. Legal requirements to retain information
relating to work done for government, banks and other large
organisations has led to a data growth of 80% a year," he said.
Enterprise Vault will give remote workers access to a
centralised, compressed archive.
Atkins is implementing the e-mail archive system in phases to
help reduce the impact on users.
"We decided not to be aggressive on timescales to give users
time to get comfortable with the new application and attend
training courses and awareness sessions," said Jolley.
