Google is looking for another chief financial officer after George Reyes announced his retirement from the internet's biggest firm.

Google said Reyes will help it find a successor and assist in an "orderly transition", with a replacement expected to be in place by the end of the year.

Google chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt said, "I have known and admired George since our days together at Sun. As Google's CFO, George successfully navigated our initial public offering, the regulatory demands of Sarbanes-Oxley, and the management challenges of scaling a global finance organisation."

Reyes said, "Working at Google these past five-and-a-half years has been an extraordinary ride."

Google has acquired a string of companies since its initial public offering to diversify its search engine revenues, including the acquisition of YouTube. It is now also trying to challenge Microsoft in the supply of desktop productivity tools.
