The government plans to introduce a quality mark later
this year to help IT buyers choose suppliers with genuine carbon
offsetting schemes.
"People need to be sure that when they buy an offsetting
product, the emissions reductions are actually taking place. This
is why we are developing this code, which will be accompanied by a
quality mark for accredited products," said the minister for
climate change,
biodiversity and waste, Joan Ruddock.
The government code will be voluntary, meaning that IT suppliers
will be able to choose whether they want to seek accreditation for
some or all of their products, which could include servers,
monitors and cooling systems.
The Green Grid - a consortium of IT firms seeking to lower power
consumption in datacentres - has said that the
development of metrics and agreed-on quality marks are key to
enabling
datacentre managers to make informed decisions.
"Defining and propagating best energy-efficiency practices in
datacentre operation, construction and design begins with clear
metrics and assurance marks," said John Tuccillo, director of the
Green Grid.
