MunicipalWi-Fiexpenditure in the US and UK will grow 48% a year, from £450m in 2007 to £3.2bn in 2012, said analystDatamonitor.

Kate McCurdy, an analyst at Datamonitor, said, "By deploying wireless networks from street lights and lamp posts around a community, local governments provide citizens, businesses and public employees with low-cost - or even free - ubiquitous internet connectivity while outdoors."

Datamonitor said such networks increased council employee flexibility and mobility, supported emergency services communications, and helped drive inward investment.

Datamonitor said around 400 cities in the US and UK have deployed or are currently building municipal wireless networks.
