Communications regulator Ofcom wants voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service providers to let their customers dial 999 in emergencies.

Ofcom said nearly 80% of VoIP users did not know if their calls to 999 would go through.

In proposals published today Ofcom said any VoIP service that allows users to make calls to ordinary phone numbers must also offer access to 999 by early 2008.
