Toshibahas recalled thousands
moreSony battery packsin response to
concern over fire risk. The recall is not connected to the
industry-wide recall last year in response to other faulty Sony
batteries.
Toshiba has logged laptop battery overheating incidents in both
2006 and 2007 in connection with the latest faulty battery
batch.
Toshiba said, "Over a relatively short period, certain incidents
occurred where certain battery packs installed in Toshiba portable
computers caught fire.
"Based on its investigation, Sony Corporation, supplier of the
subject batteries, concluded that certain battery cells
manufactured in a specific manufacturing lot could be affected by a
certain issue that could potentially lead to a safety issue."
Toshiba said Sony assured it the recall programme should be
limited to the manufacturing lot of the battery cells in question,
and not others.
Toshiba laptop models fitted with the faulty batteries are the
Satellite A100/A105 and the Tecra A7.
Toshiba's recall notice does not say how may batteries are
affected by the problem, but Reuters reports that more than 5,000
packs are affected.
It is not known at this stage whether other laptop manufacturers
were supplied from the same faulty batch.
Last year, Sony had to replace approaching 10m batteries used in
machines from various manufacturers, including Dell, Apple and
Toshiba.
Since this problem, Dell, Apple and Lenovo have all experienced
other different faulty laptop battery problems.
