The European Commission is supporting the development of a standard to support broadband communications over power lines.

The Commission has financially backed the efforts of the Opera 2 Consortium, an industry body, which is working with the IEEE standards organisation to develop a power-line comms standard.

"We are excited at the prospect of continuing to work to achieve an open standard that fulfils the requirements of all the various power line markets, operators, retailers and utilities," said Javier Arriola, Opera Project Coordinator.

An IEEE meeting recently took place in Edinburgh to discuss a global power-line standard.
