CIOs need to commission strategic projects within their
first 100 days in the job if they are to be seen as successful,
according to research.
The research,
covering 50 CIOs at 350 FTSE companies was sponsored by IT services
supplier EDS and was carried out by Populus. It found that UK CIOs
stay in position for slightly longer than three years despite
increasingly complex IT transformation projects that take longer to
deliver results.
The research also said CIOs and CEOs need to work together more
closely. “The CIO needs to be able to explain the bottom-line
benefits and how they can affect true business transformation while
keeping the business running as normal day to day”, said Sean
Finnan, vice-president and managing director, EDS UK and Ireland
Commercial Business.
Finnan said CIOs are “caught in a value trap; 60% to 80% of IT
budgets are being spent on keeping current environments alive. CEOs
see most of their money being spent on just standing still”.
