Dell is offering Linux-based PCs for $50 (£26)
below the price of equivalent Windows machines.
A range of Linux desktops and laptops are now offered on the
Dell US website to buy, but they are
not so far available in the UK.
All the machines run the Ubuntu version of Linux. The high-end
Inspiron 1420 notebook, for instance, costs $774. A similar
Windows-based 1420 would cost $824.
While a $50 discount on such a machine would be welcome by Linux
fans, some may say the discount could be higher, considering the
standalone prices of Windows OS software are far higher than
$50.
Dell has so far refused to say when similar Linux machines will
be available in the UK.
