Nottinghamshire Health Informatics Service has
completed a three-month trial to provide clinicians with
secure mobile access to electronicpatient records.
The trial has the potential to improve staff productivity by
25%, reduce travel time by 32%, and improve patient care. Barbara
Stuttle, CBE, NHS
Connecting for Health's National Clinical Lead for Nursing
said, “Users have access to real-time information, enabling them to
plan their day better and have direct contact with colleagues and
hospitals.”
Developed in association with Intel and Dell, the new mobile
working environment has been designed to help staff quickly and
securely access patient records from remote locations.
During the three-month field trial in Nottingham, Dell provided
community-based clinicians and therapists with
3G-enabled Latitude notebooks that could automatically select
Vodafone’s GPRS, 3G or 3G broadband network access dependent on
availability, to provide users with access to patient care records
on the move.
Users remotely accessed the records stored on the Care Records
Service over a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN). The smartcard
reader built into the Latitude notebook PC was used to provide
secure access to the VPN.
