UK businesses have not set targets to reduce their
carbon footprints because many do not understand how lower
power costs can help save money in IT budgets, a study has
found.
The Green IT Awareness Survey revealed that 79% businesses
believe in the
concept of greener IT but are failing to translate this belief
into action.
This is despite the fact that a small server will now cost more
to power during its lifecycle than it costs to purchase initially,
according to findings.
Instead, enterprise users are looking to suppliers and to the
Government to carry the responsibility for bringing down
emissions.
“Systems efficiency is the cheapest and easiest way of
reducing the carbon footprint, and delivered properly, it has
the benefit of bringing down costs across the board,” says Dan
Sutherland, founder and acting chair of the
Green Technology Initiative which carried
out the survey.
