A hacker infiltrated one of the
Pentagon's e-mail servers,
which caused security staff to take up to 1,500 accounts offline to
deal with the problem. A spokesman for the Pentagon said the e-mail
system did not contain top-secret information relating to military
operations, but would not confirm if the hacker was able to read
e-mails.
According to officials, the attack could have originated from a
variety of sources including casual hackers, cyber vigilantes and
ideological groups or possibly nation states.
Raimund Genes, CTO at security provider Trend Micro, said that
the increased digitisation of assets makes government targets in
particular vulnerable to attack and that shoring up security was a
top priority for many departments.
