Unisys has won a
radio frequency identification (RFID) contract with the US
military to improve its supply chain.
The contract with
the
US Department of Defence (DoD) is worth around £14.7m over a
year, with further three one-year options on the table which could
boost the value up to £57m, said Unisys.
Unisys began working with the DoD on RFID technology 13 years
ago, to maintain and enhance an in-transit visibility system for
supplies using RFID.
Greg Baroni, senior vice president of Unisys Federal Systems,
said “War fighters labour in austere circumstances and
environments. Unisys, with partners L-3 Communications TMSD and WFI
Government Services, is proud to support our soldiers globally with
this network.”
Unisys currently tracks around 125,000 shipments of supplies each
week, including ammunition, food/rations and water, medical
supplies, vehicles, vehicle parts and aircraft, using RFID
tags.
Fixed and handheld readers send and receive radio signals to and
from the tags. Because data written to each tag is replicated among
five servers, users worldwide have access to the same information
on each item.
