IT security firm SonicWALL is acquiring Aventail, the provider of Secure Sockets Layer virtual private network (SSL) (VPN) remote access products, for around £13.1m.

SonicWALL said the deal would improve its remote data access offering to customers of all sizes.

According to analyst Infonetics Research, SonicWALL is already the market leader in providing SSL VPN appliances to small and mid-sized organisations, in terms of units.

Aventail specialises in providing higher-end SSL VPN to larger organisations.

SonicWALL said it would continue to expand the feature sets of both companies’ product lines, as well as combine the technologies for new products.
