Dell's plans to sell PCs with the Ubuntu 7.04 Linux
distribution are not expected to extend to the UK.
The open source operating system will be available as a factory
installed option for US buyers. Dell said it was "formulating
further Linux plans" but has yet to confirm any similar offering in
the UK.
Dell made a commitment to Linux in April but did not specify
which markets would benefit from releases and when.
In the UK, the firm only offers Linux factory installed on
Precision workstations, which are typically used by engineers. Its
n-Series Latitude, Optiplex and Dimension systems allow customers
to install the operating system of their choice.
About 30,000
Linux community
members from across the globe had petitioned Dell to offer
systems with Linux pre-installed, and more than 100,000
participated in a follow-up survey to determine customer
preferences, including which Linux distribution to offer.
