The UKmobile content and services
market is finally taking off, with
mobile operators attracting regular buyers of
content.
A study by research firm Informa in association with
Orange explored the mobile behaviour of 2,000 UK users.
The advent of faster
GPRS and 3G phone services seems to have overcome many of the
difficulties faced by the operators when they relied on slow WAP
connections over standard GSM services to deliver content.
Informa says the UK mobile content market was worth £661m in
2006, with 50% of revenues coming from 25-34-year-olds.
Nick Lane, a principal analyst at Informa, said, “If the
wireless industry can encourage occasional spenders to regularly
consume content, the mobile-content-market will expand much
further.”
Lane said survey respondents complained of high charges. He said
operators should consider more mobile advertising to subsidise
lower content charges.
While 35% of respondents said they had used the mobile internet,
location-based services and mobile banking topped the service
wish-list among users.
