The number of unique phishing websites detected by the
Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) rose to 55,643 in April 2007, a
massive jump of nearly 35,000 from March.
Similar to
tactics employed by phishing gangs in late
2006, APWG researchers encountered phishers placing
thousands of phishing URLs under the same domain.
The number of brands being attacked was 174, which included
non-financial brands such as social networking, VoIP, and large
web-based e-mail providers.
The number of unique phishing reports submitted to APWG in April
was 23,656, a drop of over 1,000 from March. Financial services
continues to be the most targeted industry sector at 92.5% and APWG
noted that several large US banks are among the most attacked
brands.
