Project managers' priorities conflict with business'

Most IT project managers do not think that finishing a project on time and in budget is important.

Research by Parity Group, a provider of IT business services, looked into the attitudes of over 200 project managers, and found there was a disparity between what most businesses want from IT projects and what project managers consider their prime objectives.

Whilst the research found that meeting a client’s objectives was a top priority for 70% of project managers interviewed, this was largely at the expense of expected timescales and budgets.

Only 35% of project managers considered completing within budget very important, and only 38% thought finishing on time was a top priority.

However, a meagre 0.5% of respondent project managers admitted to working on a failed project.

Alwyn Welch, Parity Group CEO, said, “The overwhelming conclusion is that poor leadership is jeopardising project success. From a lack of commercial awareness to poor fostering of team skills, too many organisations are failing to provide senior leadership throughout a project.”
