Internet service providers and software suppliers should provide more security services and applications for the public, a member of the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee has said.

Lord Broers, chairman of the sub-committee for investigating personal internet security, said the responsibility for staying safe online was divided and unbalanced, with the emphasis on users, rather than on suppliers.

Broers said that users relied mainly on the goodwill of suppliers to provide security, but the committee was examining the possibility of regulation to make suppliers take more responsibility.

The results of the sub-committee's inquiry, due to be published in July, will provide the first in-depth parliamentary study of the state of internet security.
