More than 8,300
counterfeit versions of Microsoft software
have been found installed in various UK businesses since July
last year, the software giant has reported.
Microsoft’s anti-piracy unit said that
illegal software use was a growing problem
in medium-sized businesses.
However, the company said its Keep IT Real anti-piracy programme
had prompted a 3.8% drop in Windows XP piracy rates.
A report published last week by Gfk NOP for the Business
Software Alliance (BSA) also illustrated the issue of illegal
software.
The report found that 41% of small and medium sized businesses
in the UK don’t understand what could be at risk by using
unlicensed or illegal software.
Microsoft started its Keep IT Real initiative to create greater
awareness among businesses and individuals about the dangers
involved in unlawful applications and how to ensure their purchases
are above board.
