Symantec has launched a trial version of an online data backup service for SMEs. The on-demand service, Symantec Protection Network – Online Backup Service, is available via a web browser.

IDC analyst Doug Chandler said, "Symantec Protection Network - Online Backup Service uses the software-as-a-service model to offer sub-enterprise firms a more affordable way to get access to proven data protection technology."

The cost of the service will be based on usage. It will be distributed directly by Symantec and also through its reseller network. The backed-up data will be stored in Symantec datacentres.

Symantec Protection Network – Online Backup Service is scheduled to become available later this year.
