Microsoft has issued a hotfix after receiving more than
100 complaints concerning a bug in Windows Vista that makes it
difficult to copy files from one disc or PC to
another.
The bug affects a function in Vista that calculates the time
remaining to complete a file copy.
One user on the Microsoft Technet forum said, "When moving a
file (size not important) from drive C to drive E (both Sata II on
same PC), it takes ages for the green progress indicator in the
address bar to reach 100%. File transfer starts but the progress
indicator doesn't move." After an indeterminate period, transfer
starts moving the progress bar along to completion.
Another user experienced the same problem using a virtual
private network to copy files from one PC to another.
"Transfers are essentially impossible to get working. It will
sit at 'calculating time remaining' for five to 10 minutes then
tell me the file is not available," he said.
He added that the files could be copied and pasted between his
Windows Vista Business Edition PC and a Windows Vista Ultimate
machine via the clipboard by running Microsoft's Remote Desktop
Protocol.
Microsoft has produced a supported hotfix for the problem. On
its support website, the company said, "Apply it
only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
"This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you
are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you
wait for the next Windows Vista service pack that contains this
hotfix."
