The financial services industry outdid all other sectors
in its spending on servers last year, accounting for 25.1% of
worldwide server spend in 2006, according to analyst
Gartner.
Gartner said
the sector covered investment services, banking and insurance.
The communications server market was a distant number two for
global server spend, accounting for 13.5%, and the government
market was the number three vertical with 11.5% of total server
spend.
"The financial services market has been the investment leader
for all IT spending, and the server market is no exception," said
Gartner analyst Kiyomi Yamada. "In 2006, many financial
institutions faced challenges for operational risk management and
regulatory requirements. This led to structural changes, and this,
in turn, resulted in more server sales."
IBM was the leading supplier in the financial services market,
taking 44.6% of all server revenue in 2006. HP was number two in
this market with a 26.7% share, followed by Sun Microsystems in
third place.
