The Home Office is reviewing plans to roll out a police
national intelligence sharing system identified as a priority in
the Bichard Inquiry into the Soham murders.
The Impact Programme is designed to plug gaps in intelligence
sharing between police forces by linking and indexing regional
intelligence databases.
“The delivery of the Impact programme is currently being
reviewed to ensure delivery that reflects the long term needs of
the police service and represents the best value investment – a
decision on the way forward will be taken shortly,” the Home Office
said.
Home Office minister John Reid is understood to be reviewing
whether to continue with one element of Impact, the Cross-Regional
Information Sharing Project, intended as an interim solution to
intelligence sharing.
“Any changes made to the Impact programme would be designed to
improve its delivery and will not compromise child protection of
the ultimate objective of delivering the Police National Database
by December 2010,” said a spokesman.
