Description:
The proliferation of removable media and portable devices-including PDAs, MP3 players and USB memory sticks-in the enterprise creates a dilemma for IT security administrators. Even though many devices are valuable business tools, they also present new security challenges-including data leakage and introduction of malware-that could jeopardise the confidentiality, integrity and availability of sensitive corporate information.
Today's devices have a tremendous amount of storage capacity. An intruder, a disgruntled employee or anyone else can easily download large quantities of company information onto a device and walk right out the front door.
In addition, many devices are now capable of launching applications and, as a result, "mobile malware" has emerged as a security threat. For example, late in 2006, Apple unknowingly shipped a very small fraction of video iPods that were infected with a virus that could have left Windows users vulnerable. Similarly, around the same time, McDonald's Japan recalled promotional MP3 players after learning that they had been inadvertently loaded with a spyware Trojan that, when downloaded onto a PC or laptop, could potentially have been used to pilfer proprietary corporate data.
