Sanyowill share the
cost of recalling around 205,000 laptop batteries used inLenovomachines,
Reuters reports.
Lenovo recalled the Sanyo-manufactured fire hazard batteries
last week, after five incidents either caused injury to users or
damaged their property.
It is Lenovo’s second major laptop battery recall in six months,
after being one of a number of major laptop suppliers which fell
foul of Sony-manufactured fire hazard laptop batteries last
year.
Sanyo’s share of the recall costs comes as the loss-making
company faces an investigation into its dealings by Japan's
securities watchdog the Securities Exchange and Surveillance
Commission (SESC).
It is not known what the total cost of the recall will be, and
how the two firms will split the cost. But the pair have decided to
share the cost because the battery in question was jointly
developed by both companies, said Reuters.
The major Sony recall last year cost it an estimated £230m, but
the number of units involved was well over six million.
