Lenovo has recalled 205,000
fire-hazard laptop batteries manufactured by
Sanyo, in its
second major laptop battery recall in six months.
Lenovo recalled around 500,000 batteries last year, which were
made by Sony, which were also a fire hazard. That move came after
similar batteries were recalled by Dell, Apple, Toshiba and
others.
The latest move by Lenovo is now set to be copied by other
laptop manufacturers who use similar Sanyo batteries.
The batteries in question can suffer from overheating, and past
incidents have caused an injury to one user and damage to other
users’ property.
The batteries affected were manufactured for use with ThinkPad
notebook computers that shipped worldwide between November 2005 and
February 2007.
Lenovo sold the batteries with new notebook computers or as
optional or replacement batteries on the ThinkPad R60 and R60e
Series, ThinkPad T60 and T60p Series, and the ThinkPad Z60m, Z61e,
Z61m, and Z61p Series computers.
Lenovo says existing battery users should instead run their
machine on AC power until getting a free replacement, particularly
if there is a chance the battery can get knocked about in
transit.
