Humberside Policehas
issued biometric USB drives among staff to maintain data
security.
The devices from MicroRiver use fingerprint recognition in
addition to password level protection so that only authorised users
can access information on the appliance.
“USB drives are plug and play, so this gives us the added
confidence that all confidential data transferred is secure,” said
Roy MacDona, information security manager at Humberside Police.
Eight other UK police forces are evaluating the system as a
means of replacing floppies, CDs and DVDs, according to the
company.
The need to secure USB drives is increasing as they gain
popularity. By 2008, Gartner research predicts that the number of
flash drives shipped will have reached 155 million a year.
