The US Environmental Protection Agency is
developing an Energy Star rating designed to give energy efficiency
guidance to IT directors buying PCs and servers.
Andrew Fanara, who manages the Energy Star programme at the US
Environmental Protection Agency, said the programme aimed to
encourage manufactuers to make PCs and servers energy
efficient.
A study by Jonathan Koomey, a staff scientist at Lawrence
Berkeley National Laboratory, last month reported that in 2005 the
electricty cost associated with datacentres, servers and cooling
equipment was more than £3.68bn.
In July, Energy Star is set to release a rating for desktop PCs,
allowing buyers to assess their power consumption. The server
rating is under development.
